The Cambodia Institute for Media Studies

CIMS Director: Moeun Chhean Nariddh, 40, has worked as a journalist for the last 16 years, including four years as a reporter with the English-language Phnom Penh Post newspaper and 13 years as a journalism trainer at the Cambodia Communication Institute and elsewhere. In 2004, he was a journalism lecturer at the former ASEAN University in Phnom Penh before working for six months with Internews Europe to train Cambodian journalists on how to report on HIV/AIDS. Upon completion of the HIV/AIDS project, he joined Internews Network to train local journalists in a three year investigative reporting skills training project. In 2002, he received the Helman/Hammett Award from Human Rights Watch for his contribution to the promotion of free press in Cambodia. He is a co-author of the Investigative Reporting Handbook for Cambodian Journalists, which is the first training manual on investigative reporting in Cambodia. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and is finishing a Master’s Degree in Eng lish. Nariddh received his professional trainings in journalism in Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Sweden and USA .

Associate Director: Phann Ana, 39, trained and mentored journalists in investiga- tive reporting and International Criminal Court and Khmer Rouge Tribunal coverage at Internews Network Cambodia from 2006-2008. He was a reporter and associate editor for the English language Cambodia Daily for eight years, where he became one of the first investigative reporters in Cambodia, writing about corruption and human trafficking. Ana received journalism training in overseas training and exchange programs in Thailand, Sweden and Japan. He received scholarships to attend several programs, including: a 1997 Radio Journalism Training program with Indo-China Media Memorial Foundation in Thailand; a three-month-cultural and journalism exchange program in Tokyo in 2000; and a one month program at Stockholm University for Online Research and Web Publishing Program in 2004. Ana received a Diploma in Pali Language from University of Sihanouk Raja in Phnom Penh in 1995.

Finance and Administration Manager: Then Thoeun, 30, holds an MBA degree with a major in Finance and Banking from the Institute for Business Education in Phnom Penh. A native of Prey Veng province, he has two BA degrees, one in Mathematics from Royal University of Phnom Penh, and another in Accounting from National University of Management. Thoeun worked as Finance and Administration Officer at Centre International du Credit Mutuel Cambodia, and as finance officer at East-West Management Institute in Phnom Penh, before becoming Manager of Finance and Administration for Internews Network Cambodia in 2007, responsible for accounting for a $150,000 a year budget.

IT Specialist and Trainer: Khuon Sokkhim, 24, a native of Phnom Penh, graduated from National University of Management in 2006 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems. He worked as a graphic designer and as a computer trainer in a private school before joining Internews Cambodia as IT support and Trainer in 2007. He has been training journalists in computer skills, Internet skills and blogging. He attended a weeklong training session in training users in SPIP (Système de Publication pour l’Internet Partagé or Participatif) and Wikimedia in Bangkok.

Training Manager: Pouv Savuth, 33. Savuth was a newspaper reporter for four years in Phnom Penh. He is studying for a law degree at Cambodian Mekong University in Phnom Penh and blogs about the environment and freedom of the press at his website pousavuth.wordpress.com. Savuth has attended journalism trainings in Thailand, Sweden, China, Vietnam, Laos, Japan and Bangladesh. He was a Writing Fellow Reporter for Inter Press Service in Bangkok; in 2003 he attended an eight- month environmental journalism exchange program in Bangladesh under the South-South Exchange Programme of Fredskorpset, Norway. In 2006, he attended an environmental training course in Sweden. He holds diplomas from Cambodian Communications Institute in Internet research, profile writing, professional journalism and environmental reporting. He was a participant in the Khmer Rouge Tribunal training course at Internews and is a member of International Federation of Environmental Journalists, Japanese Forum of Environmental Journalists and Asia Pacific Forum of Environmental Journalists.
